Cladding safety measures welcome

29 March 2018

By Tim McKibbin - REINSW CEO

Following the Grenfell disaster in London, the NSW Government has released proposed reforms to address safety risks created by combustible cladding on buildings.

The Draft Regulation requires owners of buildings with combustible cladding to register them with the NSW Government and provide a cladding statement within prescribed timeframes.

REINSW made a submission on the public consultation and supports addressing the safety risks. However, we did request that the reform should allow for a pragmatic and more lenient transition that results in a clear, fair and simple to use system.

Tenants also have no recourse under the Draft Regulation and so REINSW recommended that consideration should be given on how consumer rights would be protected if combustible cladding is found on a building.

We are awaiting the final regulation, where we trust our comments will be taken into account.
